With his defection expected, Sen. James Jeffords of Vermont said he will announce on Wednesday whether he will bolt the Republican Party, a move that would give Democrats control of the now evenly divided Senate for the first time since 1994.

``I think he's doing it, and I think he's doing it tomorrow,'' Sen. John Breaux (news - bio - voting record), a moderate Louisiana Democrat who teamed up with Jeffords on a number of tax and budget matters this year.

``The sentiment definitely is that he (Jeffords) will leave,'' said a senior Senate Republican aide.

Dear Gordon: Jeffords' office refused to confirm or deny a report that Democrats had twice offered Jeffords committee chairmanships in a failed effort to
get him to switch parties.

Am I the ONLY person who is OUTRAGED that a person can be allowed to SELL his OFFICE to the highest bidder? Any American should be CONCERNED about this IMHO. JDN
