Has a 'pleasant' constitutional monarchy, absent major external force or violent overthrow, ever been removed

I'm not much of a history buff so I can't say that it hasn't happened, but it doesn't seem likely. I'm having trouble imagining a scenario in which it would happen.

Assuming your pleasant-all-around scenario, why remove the monarchy? Surely there would be a segment of the citizenry that would be attached to the monarchy. Why expend the political capital to remove it? I would think that most that could happen would be some further marginalizing of the monarchy, not outright removal.
