That seems very appealing to me these days. I can remember when US politicians were expected to show statesmanship on serious matters even if they horse traded in smoke-filled back rooms most of the time. Now we rarely see any acts of statesmanship--everything is flaming partisan.

I like the idea of having a non-partisan touchstone--some way to find an anchor when the partisans are all going nuts. I think a touchstone would be very comforting and it would give a perspective that shows the excesses for what they are. I think we've become so accustomed to excesses and rhetoric that too many of us fail to recognize them as such any more.
