You're partially right.... As long as different car models can be built out of the same "platform". Take Volkswagen for instance: its (Spanish) Seat models use the same platform (and some models even have a VW engine) as its core VW models built in Germany. But what's amazing is the high concentration of different BRANDS under the same corporate holding:

Volkswagen currently owns VW, Seat, Bugatti, Rolls-Royce/Bentley... Gruppo Fiat currently owns Ferrari, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Fiat.

Since most of these car models don't use the same platform, there is not much room for cost savings through economies of scale...
