However, if they don't support DDR, it says to the market that Intel still considers RDRAM to be the successor to SDRAM, which is a long term positive for RMBS.

I think you've sensed the confusion here. Intel has been saying for months they will support DDR with the i845. I don't think that has changed. (And they support DDR in Servers).
What they also have been saying for month's is they will limit support to DDR200, apparently for technical reasons. (Note: their input to JEDEC only impacts the spec's for DDR200, PC1600. They stated to JEDEC in no uncertain terms they have no interest in DDR266).

It's probable that P4/DDR will slip in between SDRAM and DRDRAM at introduction. DDR could eventually migrate down into the SDRAM space.

Dave B... (and hdl) Sorry about that. My eyes saw SDRAM but my mind saw DDR. You would think that SDRAM in P4 would hurt Rambus. That would be the logical thought. It all boils down to cost and who has the better sales pitch. But it can't be cost alone. e-Machine proves that. While an e-Machine computer is cheaper than dirt the company is having financial problems and are looking for a buyer of the company last time I heard. And while they are cheaper than dirt there are still plenty other more expensive computers being sold by DELL, COMPAQ, HP, etc. So it can't just be cost. How many readers here bought a new computer over the last few years that didn't buy the cheaper e-Machine, but bought the more expensive DELL, etc. I believe the sales pitch will be the key. The sales pitch will be on performance and new top technology at a reasonable price... and that spells RAMBUS!
