Well, most of the soldiers couldn't vote, actually, but it is true to some extent. But the main thing is that it is hard to disentangle all of the historical factors. For example, I just helped my son with a term paper for modern American history. I helped to steer him to a thesis and set him up with some books. The thesis was that the New Deal helped to stabilize the country during a period of social turmoil and radical political activity, even though it was not terribly effective at curing the Depression. I believe that: under the circumstances, with Communists gaining members and penetrating the unions; the Socialists, at one point, winning almost a million votes; and various right- wingers gaining power, like Father Coughlin and Gerald Smith, whose Union Party got almost a million votes in 1936, Franklin Roosevelt helped to calm things down and keep things from exploding. Thus, the New Deal is at once criticizable as economics, and defensible as politics.......
