Ian, from your briefing.com snippet >This news is surprisingly bad considering Applied Materials' (AMAT) recent conference call<

They appear not to know that the April SEMI numbers are averages of Feb,March and April whereas the AMAT CC was just a week ago, in mid-May.

I know you knew.

Ian,

Not all that far apart. AMAT is a sturdy trading vehicle for short-termers and a worthy long-term investment for others. Like Briefing, I would be cautious (very) near term but friendly long term.

I tend to doubt much bouyancy in BTB until the autumn at earliest. Seasonal factors at play currently in addition to continuation of weak PC, cell phone sales comps. I agree that the market is an efficient discounter and would not be surprised to see this early cyclical growth name bottom amid crummy fundamentals. I do think that the weakness in the sector could draw out further than many longs now expect, which could cause some potential disappointment later this year.

Still short naked Jan '03 40 LEAP puts in the $9 range, so you can see that my stance matches my rhetoric.<g>
