I would say that is a matter of conscience. I certainly think moderates belong, but those who are decidedly liberal do not. I merely point out that the "base" to which you refer is not every possible constituency, but the largest and most active part of the party. In common parlance, "playing to the base" means playing to the most ideologically committed, the one's who would never think of crossing major party lines, but might sit on their hands or bolt for a third party. These are conservatives in the Republican Party, and liberals among Democrats.....
