Darrell - well, I'm a little confused. I was starting to believe I understood the strategy, and if in fact DELL can keep the footprints it will turn out to be a good move. They recently lost ground on server customer sat, although the desktop and laptop numbers look good. Great service (in the customer service sense) will continue to be the key to developing some loyalty.

But this latest round plays to the media perception - DELL is doing a price war because they can (both Rollins and Vanderslice have said this), and have no clear goal beyond causing pain (a media conclusion that Vanderslice has now bolstered). If the explanation revolves around a parallel program to enhance brand loyalty and retain footprints, they should articulate that - it's hardly a trade secret, just hard to do.

darrell...vanderslice stated that it is not a "price war", but a "cost war"....dell has the ability as low cost producer and component buyer to engage in a cost war....

doesn't this sound familiar...remember the taiwan earthquake? in an unstable economy, where you model depends on the downstream for optimum performance, then the downstream must be rock solid....not much of a visible foundation in the current economy...one minor break in the supply chain equates to major profit impact
