Scott, apparently if Jeffords bolts the Rep. party this will be a major blow for the shrub. The Dems already have promised Jeffords chairmanship of the senate environmental committee...and of course all the key senate chairmanships including energy will fall under the Dems. This will put all of Bush's proposals in jeopardy. There is a God after all!

His primary reason for leaving the party...should he do so...is because the party has moved too far to the right for a moderate....which Jeffords is. Apparently, at best, Jeffords was ignored and at worst was undermined by fellow Reps.

And on top of that, Strom Thurmond of SC is ill and may be replaced by an appointee....and the appointer...the Dem. governor of SC. And Mcaffee of RI is also somewhat disenchanted with the party and is thinking of bolting as well.

Its too early to celebrate...but should the above come to fruition, they will be major body blows to the Rep party.
