Intel P4 chipset supporting DDR "unoffically" next quarter according to Asus and Gigabyte.

SiS, VIA and ALi have all been continuously cutting DDR chipset prices from the original approximate US$30. The SiS 635T chipset for Socket 370 to motherboard manufacturers is now at US$19, and VIA’s Pro266 has dropped accordingly. However, according to sources, SiS has unilaterally slashed its prices while VIA is using a rebate strategy. Its Pro266 comes to just over US$20 after the rebate. ALi’s Aladdin Pro IV chipset, mainly targeted at motherboard makers like Asustek Computer, is priced nearly the same as VIA’s.

....Another important factor is Intel’s imminent release of its 845 chipset for the Pentium 4. Intel is scheduled to release the 845, which supports PC133 SDRAM, in the third quarter. According to Intel’s roadmap, the company is not planning to release DDR-supporting chipset until early next year, but first-tier motherboard makers including Asustek and Gigabyte Technology already have 845 chipset samples on hand and can already support DDR SDRAM. SiS said that since Intel’s early release of a DDR-supporting chipset is unavoidable, Taiwan chipset makers have to move early to capture market share prior to the 845’s release.
