Beautifully put Lars. One other thing desktop-oriented people don't understand about mobile embedded systems is the hard constraint imposed by power dissipation. More complex software equals more Ram and CPU equals shorter battery lives. This is the reason why my IBM notebook running Windows2000 (required by my company :() only lasts 90 minutes on its battery, but my Nokia cellphone goes for a whole week *switched on* before it starts beeping at me.

And yes I know I can't run Excel on my Nokia phone, but soon, it will be able to run voice-activated Java client software for a spreadsheet on a SUNW server somewhere, and the battery will still last a week.
