You sound like a cool person and I agree with just about all that you say except the issue of whether farmers should be subsidized. Giving people tomatoes for cheap has a trade off. There is no taste and probably not as many nutrients.I say the people get what the pay for. The ones that figure out tomatoes ripened on the vine are a jillion times better can grow their own or buy from creative farmers like yourself. Just like the micro-brew craze proved, people will pay for quality. And mass production (where food and beverage are concerned) usually diminishes quality.

I say let the masses suffer with chemically ripened tomatoes! Pretty profound, huh?
