TL,

Amazingly, Vermont has just become the most influential state (at least for the time being) in the U.S. Senate. Leahy now chairs the Judiciary Committee, and Jeffords has thrown the balance of power to the Democrats (who now owe him big time and should give him whatever he wants). Not bad for a small state from the standpoint of pure political clout. Jeffords is term limited out at the end of this term anyway, so he just bought himself enormous political capital without fear of retribution, unless the Republicans can regain control (doesn't appear likely) at which time Vermont would become the equivalent of Guam.
