So there is a reasonable point?

If you dig around far enough you find a fragment of a point. I guess that his objective is to get rid of the cameras because of privacy or government overreach or some philosophic perspective. He chooses not to make that point straight out. Instead, he focuses on the length of the yellow.

Perhaps he heard of one instance where that happened. Perhaps it is, in fact, a dangerous trend. Or perhaps he made it up. I don't know. What he did was divert the discussion to a peripheral issue and claim that as material. He appeals to people's fear of traffic accidents and distaste for greedy public officials to accomplish his ends. He overstates to further inflame. He panders to the stupidity of the audience knowing that many won't recognize that shortening the yellow has nothing to do with whether or not there should be cameras. And the fact that he even raised the issue at all, particularly given the timing, suggests that he considers this a national priority.

If what he wants to accomplish is to disabuse localities from fudging the length of the yellow because it's dangerous, there are direct and businesslike ways to do that--without rabble rousing or scaring people to death.

You say that that's politics as usual. I won't disagree, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't sicken me. This is not a particularly egregious example, but I consider out of bounds. I don't think one has to go so far as eco-terrorism or bombing abortion clinics to be out of bounds.
