Nobody should limit a company's freedom, unless that company is limiting the freedom of other companies. The decision on when this happens is what the courts are for.

Luckily, the Internet and public, non-proprietary standards is about to replace the Windows PC as the primary infrastructure, and the Internet doesn't require you to use specific software from a specific vendor. Just look at Linux: 2 years ago, Netscape 4.x was the only real good browser on Linux. Today, there are several browsers, that are all good: Opera 5, Netscape 4.x, Mozilla/Gecko/Nautilus/Netscape 6, Konqueror 2.1.1, StarOffice 5.2. A typical installation like mine has all of these browsers installed.

The fact, that all of these browsers work well shows how much standardization can do. I hope that the OpenOffice project can do to Office suites what HTML standards did to browsers - this will enable full competition on Office suites without losing file format compatibility.

Lars.

business as usual on this thread. it 's either those that evangelize for "doing your spreadsheet on the coffee machine", or those who keep forecasting the demise of M$FT´, or those who rally to resurrect Reno's bones.
(because yes YOU are forced to buy M$FT ware ;-)
