You want affordable food? Point is, SB, pay for it now or pay for it later. But pay for it. I don't know a single RICH farmer. Some who have inherited. But that is because of land values, or other investments or work. You don't get rich, singly, farming. It just doesn't happen. But pay your food now or later. Taxes or at the counter. It costs to raise food. Much more that people realize. And it's hard work. Not that sweating in the sun counts for more than getting a backache at the computer. I've done both. Can't say I prefer one over the other. But it's a decision we make as a country. Do we care that our food supply is devirsified (sp) over many farmers so that we won't be held hostage by one or a few?
