So Clinton, Gore, the Dem. leadership, etc. are all fanatics because they demonized their opponents or mislead while advocating or discarded the truth?

Clinton and Nixon lied because they were severely flawed characters, not because they were fanatics.

What I intended to convey by my definition is being so consumed with one's dearly held beliefs that one acted as I described, not simply exhibiting the behaviors for whatever reason. There's a difference between not listening to someone else because you don't give a damn about them or because it's not to your advantage and not listening to them because you perceive their words as heresy and you block them out. Lies intended to hide your sins are different from lies designed to solidify a brainwash.

If you've thought things over and someone is telling you something that is at odds with your core belief, then why should you "listen"?

Because you might learn something? Because it's polite and respectful of them as fellow humans? Because the more effectively you listen to them, the more effectively you can counter their points? Because it might be interesting or stimulating or engaging? Because it's important to test one's beliefs every now and again to assure that they're still valid?

I'm not suggesting actively listening to idiots who are rehashing the same old points that you've already considered and discarded. But if you blow everyone off immediately and automatically just because they're not singing your perfect little tune, I think you're over the top.
