Joe: And it's causing Compaq a lot of headaches, according to I believe The Inquirer.

To be sure, it isn't the ideal situation for Compaq, but I don't think it's that much of a problem. As long as DRDRAM doesn't completely wither away, the increased cost associated with low-volume DRDRAM isn't going to impact mid to high-end Alpha systems. For low-end, they can "just" strip the memory controller and hook it up to an AMD DDR Northbridge (similar to what they have already done with the 21264).

In a few years, DDR2 and some next-gen version of DRDRAM will be out (assuming one or the other doesn't "win the war") and Compaq would have to completely redo the memory controller anyway.
