Oddly enough, because I see Jeffords as a true weakling, I think Bush's mistake was not inviting the weakling Jeffords to the White House while honoring the teacher from the weakling Jeffords' homestate of Vermont.

Bush should have treated the weakling Jeffords as if Jeffords was a five year old and invited him to the party because if Bush had done that then, I believe, very few of us would know who the weakling Jeffords is today.

So Bush's mistake: Bush treated the weakling Jeffords as an adult instead of as a child.
