Probably just an exercise. I don't see any real trouble spots in the world right now except for the odd shoot out at a high school in the States. The US has nothing to really defend in the the mid east right now as nobody with an army of any size is on the attack. The J-P thing is a long running guerilla war but there is no military trouble there.

It could be that they are being loaned to Taiwan for training purposes. Again China faces vast problems in any putative Taiwan Invasion, as not even Hitler would attack England over 20 miles of channel without control of the skies. China is not dead sure of that. Even with the entire Chinese fleet in the straights they face bad odds from a relatively light defense. The Chinese know it would be very expensive to try this stuff. All their rhetoric is designed to get a diplomatic deal out of Taiwan. This is something that is to Taiwan's benefit to put off for a long time, and that is just what they are doing.

Remember what happened when China invaded Vietnam. They had a huge army. Got beat bad. Way too confident. In Korea however they showed the Yanks that they were not without tenacity and good skills at basic military tactics and technology. They had excellent artillery. Where I see the Chinese being weak is on logistics and troop deployment, and advanced air troop support. On the other hand they have so many spies in Taiwan that all they have to do is air drop the uniforms, to hell with parachutists.

My money says that we are about to go to war in the Mid East!

With whom? USA doesn't have any reasonable logic to go to war with anyone in the world...
USA does what other countries are alleged of doing.... bringing down governments. The only war USA can win is maybe against Canada.... and that providing we are attacked on a weekend {since we're all in the bars then drinking to the low value of gold... 1 ounce buys enough for 12 hours}

Hutch
PS: Any terrorist attack would likely be done in Euro-land then on USA soil. Only the home brewed terrorist are your enemy.

Report: Beijing Illegally Bought Circuits
NewsMax.com Wires
Thursday. May 23, 2001
WASHINGTON -- Federal authorities have uncovered a major Chinese technology transfer program that illegally purchased thousands of U.S. radiation-protected computer chips for use in Chinese missiles and satellites, The Washington Times reported Thursday.
The company, Means Come Enterprises Inc., is under investigation for "illegally exporting radiation-hardened integrated circuits to [the People´s Republic of China] without the required [Commerce Department] export licenses," according to documents obtained by the newspaper.

The military-related technology-buying program was revealed in court papers released in Orlando, Fla., earlier this month after a raid on a Chinese company involved in selling "radiation-hardened" integrated circuits to Chinese government missile and satellite manufacturers.

Commerce Department, U.S. Customs Service and Postal Service agents raided the Orlando offices of Means Come on May 3, seizing computers and documents related to the microchip transfers.

The raid took place the same day FBI agents arrested two Chinese nationals and a third man for stealing Lucent Technologies software codes and selling them to China, The Times said.

In October 1998, Means Come officials in Florida were questioned about the circuit exports and other weapons-related technology sales. One company executive, Francis Chan, was questioned by Commerce export control agents and told them the company recently sought to purchase "U.S.-origin nuclear electronics for export to the PRC."
