That pretty much sums it up.
Humanity is a thin veneer (as anyone who has gone through a war knows all too well). But though it's thin, it's wonderful nevertheless. Just because my humanity is fragile, and relative, doesn't make me value it any less. In fact, it makes it all that more precious to me. I often think how lucky I am to live in a country where the basic needs of many are satisfied, so that we can have the luxury of humanity. It is a luxury.

The rescue of the boys by an adult at the end of the book is quite dark because just as the boys were engaged in a hunt at the end of the book, the adult who rescues them is an officer- on a cruiser- also a "hunter" of men. Thus the circle is complete. The boys are representative of the society they came from- their behavior only offends us because we don't usually send our children off to hunt and kill, we let our army personnel do it for us.
