Bush is a savvy politician. He was not given enough credit during the presidential campaign in forging a strong coalition of the various conservative factions ... and each faction is different.

However, having said that, Bush has gone on record in saying that he will not repeat the same mistake his father did, namely, move to the center, anger the right and lose re-election. Therefore, he will continue to talk the "middle" talk, but walk the right-wing walk.

So although Bush may learn from his mistake, as you say, nothing, in effect, will change ... in the big picture ... in the way the few remaining moderate Republicans will be treated. They will be treated not a whole lot different than Jeffords was treated.
