American Conservative Union and Americans for Democratic Action ratings of former Republican Senate committee chairmen and likely new Democratic chairmen (from table in Investors Business Daily):

ACU ratings:

Lugar 84, Stevens 92, Warner 81, Gramm 100, Domenici 95, McCain 81, Murkowski 100, Smith 100, Grassley 96, Helms 100, Thompson 92, Jeffords 36, Hatch 95.

Harkin 4, Byrd 28, Levin 12, Sarbanes 12, Conrad 29, Hollings 20, Bingaman 16, Jeffords(?) 36, Baucas 16, Biden 16, Lieberman 20, Kennedy 12, Leahy 8.

ADA ratings:

Lugar 10, Stevens 5, Warner 0, Gramm 0, Domenici 0, McCain 5, Murkowski 0, Smith 10, Grassley 0, Helms 5, Thompson 0, Jeffords 55, Hatch 0.

Harkin 95, Byrd 75, Levin 90, Sarbanes 95, Conrad 85, Hollings 85, Bingaman 85, Jeffords(?) 55, Baucas 85, Biden 80, Lieberman 75, Kennedy 90, Leahy 85.

These ratings show Jeffords as being significantly more liberal / less conservative than the other Republicans. Interesting thing about McCain, who is regularly denounced as a liberal by conservatives - his ACU and ADA ratings show him to be pretty conservative, after all.
