Vignette's software will be used in sites for IBM PartnerWorld, PartnerWorld for Developers, developerWorks and AlphaWorks, which receive more than 10 million page views per month and are among the most visited IBM sites for partners and developers.

Armonk, New York-based IBM and Vignette, of Austin, Texas, struck a global strategic alliance last summer.

``We're really excited about the fact that IBM did a lot of internal evaluation of competitive alternatives and selected Vignette,'' Tom Hogan, Vignette's president and chief operating officer, told Reuters.

``This is a real transaction. They're paying us for our software,'' said Hogan, who has previously held posts at Siebel Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:SEBL - news) and IBM. He would not disclose the terms of the IBM sale.

The companies also said they currently are implementing solutions for more than 25 Fortune 1,000 customers as part of their alliance. Those customers include New York Life, Bank of Montreal (Toronto:BMO.TO - news), Fidelity Investments and Caterpillar Inc.
