LOL, I didn't know about that - I was working (in the US) for much of '96 and missed the entire tournament... point to you.

There are still hooligans, certainly. They're clamped down on in the UK, especially now - I haven't been to many games, admittedly, but the last one was at the end of last season and there certainly was no violence of any sort. The main problem comes when they travel - there is still this small number of thugs who don't go for the football, they go for the fighting, and because they're not directly involved at the match it's very hard to stop them (short of pre-emptive jail, on suspicion... not exactly legal).

Their connection with football is basically that the thugs know there will be a lot of actual fans travelling, so after the game they've a good chance of starting a fight... which team they (nominally) support IMO is irrelevant.

BTW, are you to blame for the crack culture and atsounding number of murders among young urban blacks? I think that's pretty shameful, too.
