They only get knocked around when the extreme end is in power. George W. and Cheney are NOT moderates. Fewer moderates are in the Republican party these days. The Christian right wing has driven them out. They were courted by the Republicans in order to get elected...now they have to live with the results.

Jeffords defines the extreme left of the Republican party. The fact that being in favor of limited constitutional Government positions you on the extreme right shows how at risk this country really is.

If Bush, who is advocating a budget that increases the rate growth in spending over the rate of the past 8 years, including a vast expansion of Federal control over education, can be called an extreme right winger, seriously, what does that make his critics?

Will they be happy with 8%/year growth in spending? 10%? 50%? The "moderates" in this country are arguing over the timetable, not the goal.
