McKinley triples Itanium bandwidth... going from 2.1 GByte/sec to 6.x GByte/sec. But the bandwidth of Power4 is much greater. This is all very complicated isn't it? Without Microsoft pushing IA64 hard, IA64 may not flourish for quite some time. Sun certainly won't be pushing IA64 very hard (note the absolute lack of Sun in any traderag blather? Whatever happened there?). IBM will indeed have AIX5L running on IA64 but Power is their bread and butter. As that paper referenced points out in another place, IA64 was supposed to be out a full year ahead of 2H2001 (in 2H2000) and Itanium wasn't being compared to Power4, but now they both essentially show up within 4 months of each other... So where does initial penetration come from for IA64? The pundits talk about DB and web serving and crypto. But if Windows 2000 supports 64 GBytes of memory today (it does) and Foster at 1.7 GHz does better at tpmC ( does it? but most importantly isn't running beta Win64) are you suggesting to the CIO and IT director "let's give it a try?" It will be interesting to look back a year from now to see how Itanium got started and where its growth came from and why. Rob
