Lucent buying back used equipment

By Associated Press, 5/25/2001 03:48

MURRAY HILL, N.J. (AP) In an apparent attempt to help reduce
bloated inventories, Lucent Technologies is buying its own used
telecommunications equipment on the open market.
Some of the gear is refurbished and sold, officials said, while the rest
of the inventory is destroyed. Lucent spokesman John Skalko said the
Murray Hill-based company buys the equipment because ''we make
money doing it and it protects our brand.''
Lucent, citing competitive reasons, would not comment Thursday on
how much it spends on used equipment or how much it sells.
The purchases come at a time when the resale market is being
swamped with more used equipment than ever before, analysts said.
The glut is due in part to the failure of several dot-com companies and
small telecommunications carriers.
