OT: Libya: Rail network project full steam ahead on Libya coast
Middle East Economic Digest, May 25

Plans for the construction of a new coastal rail network are taking shape. The project aims to connect Ras Ajdir near Tunisia with Musaid on the Egyptian border, creating a 3,170-kilometre land bridge across North Africa.
International consultants are now preparing bids to provide consultancy services for the 1,000-kilometre stretch of line running from Benghazi to Tobruk.
...
Rail India Technical & Economic Services is conducting an initial feasibility study on a southern branch, which will eventually link the coastal city of Sirte with Sudan and Chad.
Local contractors have so far completed 60 per cent of the earthwork excavations between Ras Ajdir and Sirte.
The Railway Executive Board plans to begin laying the 370,000 tonnes of rail needed for the network in 18 months.
...
Traffic using the line will mainly be freight servicing the steel, oil and gas, cement and agricultural industries on the coast. The line passes through 10 ports, which combined handle 15 million tonnes of freight a year.
