Peretz Senior Editor allNetDevices.com May 24, 2001 A group of Stanford University Law School students this week joined a technology initiative designed to assess the usefulness of mobile data access for the legal profession. Palm, Inc. and West Group announced Wednesday that they are working with the Law School on a six-month program that will allow law school students to communicate, research, prepare for exams, and manage their studies remotely. The chief information officer of the school, Mitch Davis, designed the study as part of the school's overall wireless initiative. Wireless access to the latest information is viewed as an inherent advantage by professionals involved in the often research-intensive legal field. The program involves a 50-person faculty/student group using Palm VIIx wireless handhelds. Participants paid $100 to cover the cost of the portable keyboard, software, and six month's of wireless access. There is a three month training program and focus groups to assess effectiveness. Using the Palm VIIx handhelds, West Group will provide the access to Westlaw, which is the legal industry's most comprehensive legal research service. West Group is also providing access to six frequently used legal titles in the eBook format. Palm stated that it viewed this initiative as a part of its effort to market its devices to colleges and universities looking to enhance student services with remote access infrastructure. The school plans to roll out the software to all Stanford Law School students after the initial launch. allnetdevices.com
