DoCoMo's New Cellular Service Faces Further Delays, Paper Says

Tokyo, May 26 (Bloomberg) -- NTT DoCoMo Inc., Japan's biggest mobile phone company, may further delay launching a new high-speed wireless phone service until next year after failing to win government approval of its video transmission technology, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said without citing sources.

Japan's Posts and Telecommunications Ministry withheld approval because of concerns that high-speed transmission of moving images may be interrupted. The voice-transmission part of the technology for the new wireless mobile phone network has won government approval, the paper said.

The government has asked the company to fix software problems before it launches the service, which will have data transmission speeds up to 40 times faster than existing mobile phone services, the paper reported.

The cellular unit of Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. said in April it would put off the start of so-called third-generation services from May to October. It began a limited test service involving 4,000 users this month.
