If I recall correctly, the only place that I read the Q1 2001 date was in MaximumPC Magazine.

As for when the original core design was dropped. The rumor was that the K8 design effort was beginning to look like the K5 design effort and therefore the decision was made to cancel this core and replace it with a core based on the K7 design, using many of the members of the K7 design team.

Atiq Raza and a large number of the original NexGen design team left when the original K8 design, which the primarily NexGen team was working on, was cancelled. This mass exodus started in July 1999.
