My recollection is hazy too, but I don't think Bozell was purged because of the Bircher thing. He had embraced a rather militant form of Catholicism, writing articles in Triumph magazine that talked about how Catholics should take to the streets. I think he even suggested a uniform that should be worn, a red beret if I remember right. I think Buckley thought he had gotten a little kooky.
