This island thing started when Greg said that a godless civilization couldn't be viable and I offered that a civilization comprising the non-religious on this thread would indeed be viable. Am I going to find the newspaper shredded, and the couch soiled when I get back?! The purpose of this mental exercise, AJ, was to demonstrate that a world evolved around reason as opposed to religion, was one in which passionate cruelty and inhumanity would be rather difficult to maintain. It is stories made up about ELITISM and EXCLUSIONISM--both in this life and the AFTERlife--which feed the furnace of man's inhumanity to man. Respecting people as equals can never fuel that impersonal detachment that drove Hitler (to use the example which you incited), to raze the earth. In many ways our ideals are defined and embodied by their opposites. In the real world, the rational and the irrational must coexist. The tension of opposites somehow charges the current of evolution, just as positive and negative charges hold matter and life together. AHOY! Dost Thou espy land, AJ!
