1703: St. Petersburg Founded

Czar Peter the Great founded the city of St. Petersburg as Russia's new capital. The main site
in downtown St. Petersburg was the Trinity Church, the first church in the city. St. Petersburg
is today the most northern city in the world that has a population of over one million.

1936: Queen Mary Made Her Maiden Voyage

The British luxury liner RMS Queen Mary made her maiden voyage from Southampton,
England to New York. For more than 30 years, the Queen Mary ferried hundreds of
thousands of passengers across the Atlantic. In 1967, the ship was sold to the city of Long
Beach, California.

1937: Golden Gate Bridge Completed and Opened

San Francisco's Golden Gate bridge was completed and opened to the public. Its span of 1.2
miles (1.9 km) made it the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time. The Golden
Gate is one of the world's most recognized and photographed bridges because of its
magnificent setting, art deco architecture, and distinctive orange color.

1963: Jomo Kenyatta Elected Prime Minster of Kenya

Jomo Kenyatta was elected first prime minister of self-governing Kenya. In the early 1950s,
Kenyatta had been sentenced to seven years of hard labor for alleged links to the Mau Mau,
a clandestine anti-British organization. In 1964, Kenyatta became the first president of Kenya,
remaining in that position until 1978.

1994: Solzhenitsyn Returned to Russia

Russian Writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn returned to his homeland after living in exile for two
decades. The famous writer had been expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974 after his
three-volume expose of the Soviet prison camp system, "The Gulag Archipelago," was
published.

Indy 500, Palio dei Balestrieri
UNITED STATES: INDY 500

Race cars will roar around the track today in the prestigious Indianapolis 500. The race was
first held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1911, when $14,250 went to the winner. By
the 1980s, the prize money had exceeded $1.5 million. Crowds reach 300,000 and many
more watch the race on television. The Indy 500 race has been run every year (except during
the war years 1917-1918 and 1942-1945) on the Memorial Day Weekend.

ITALY: PALIO DEI BALESTRIERI

The Palio dei Balestrieri is an annual competition among archers held on the last Sunday in
May in Gubbio. The people of Gubbio and of nearby Sansepolcro dress in medieval
costumes and take up arms for the event, which dates back to the 1400s.
