Annette........the face on Mars formed due to a complex of geological processes.......
wander the net...look up Faults
Strike slip faults such as the San Andreas Fault near me.... cut clean straight lines when viewed from a distance...the right angles we 'percieve' are formed by other types of fault systems.........
the Earths wide geologic variations...from 30,000 above sea level.( the Himalayas).....to 30.000 below..( deep ocean trenches).........all disappear at Great distance.......
I read some time ago...that were we to shrink the earth to the size of a bowling ball.........
It would be Far Smoother ........and the geologic formations would appear only as lines.........that could be seen...but would be invisible to the touch

Annette:

Sure. The canal diggers on Mars had a momentary memory lapse and forgot to dig in the random fashion they usually used to confuse Earth-based photographers!
