Society holds in common a creed which is for the benefit of all. The inhabitants of your Island would need a creed to.

Once again, the point of the island was to refute Greg's notion that a viable society could not be produced without a deity.

Solon is building upon that his utopia. Maybe our island society would play out according to Solon's conjecture and maybe not. That's not the point. The point is that whatever social constructs the island created would be designed by us, not handed down to us by a deity. We would come up with a successful paradigm all by ourselves, that is, with out divine revelation or the illusion of divine revelation.

The reason for constraining the inhabitants to non-believers, obviously, it to test a set of humans who have no natural instinct to look to a deity for guidance but to operate strictly in a secular mode. That doesn't mean that the parties are all honest or fair or hard working or collaborative or beautiful. That doesn't mean that they don't have weaknesses, annoying habits, or egos. It only means that they are secular.
