Getting all pumped up about the UN over the gun issue will ultimately be a waste of time and energy, IMO. A little trempest in a little teapot that will not have any effect whatsoever on your personal rights or our national soveriegnty.

Part of the context of this activity in light of our recent expulsion from the Human Rights panel is that the US has resisted the dissemination of low cost AIDS drugs to the Third World, Bush has cut off funding to international family planning organizations which means less money for education about AIDS prevention, and the US remains the only country that resists an international ban on land mines. So whatever this effort is to restrict small arms proliferation, it could certainly be interpreted as an attack on the country that has the most small arms in private hands, which is also the nation that regularly thumbs its nose at any international legal agreements it doesn't like, but expects others to adhere to the ones it does like.

If you were seriously concerned about national sovereignty, you might look at NAFTA, which has a provision that allows private corporations to sue governments to overcome national laws that get in the way of their pursuit of business development. And the lawsuits are starting to fly:
