They are a tiny minority of each faction I believe.

They sure make a disproportionate amount of noise and the deference of the remainder give them too much credence.

I figure that if a faction of either side translates its political, religious, or subcultural ideology into rhetoric or policy the yield of which is (over and above that lovely feeling of superiority and sanctimony experienced by the exponents), an increase in the suffering of others, either of individuals (the slandered Diallo cops) or of groups (the impoverished third world AIDS-infected women who now won't get birth control assistance) I have no respect for that cavalier faction, and prefer that its influence be lessened.

Yeah, but extremists often get to drive the agenda. Remember that the Democrats adopted almost all the Socialist Party's platform in the 30s. Maybe the Republicans will adopt some of the Libertarian Party's platform in the near future.
