Kind of a bummer story for my generation. I know their music didn't appeal to all tastes but his guitar licks are still thought of as some of the better ones in rock and roll history.

Van Halen Getting Daily Cancer Treatment
By Dean Goodman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen, who last month ended a year of speculation by confirming that he has cancer, said on Saturday he was undergoing treatment every day but otherwise was feeling fine.

Puffing furiously on cigarettes while playing at a charity golf tournament, the 46-year-old Dutch-born leader of the veteran band that bears his name told Reuters that doctors had not indicated when he would be out of the woods.

``I'm really not ready to talk about it because there was never even a press release. I just wanted to let our fans know that I'm fine. Yes I have cancer ... but I ain't got nothing to talk about until it's gone.''

He then whispered into the tape recorder: ``I have treatment every day.''

Although Van Halen has not publicly disclosed the location of his cancer, his actress wife, Valerie Bertinelli, said earlier this month a lesion was removed from his tongue and the prognosis was getting better.

Van Halen broke his silence about the illness on April 26, posting a letter to fans on the band's Web site. He reported that specialists had declared him ``healthier than ever'' and added, ``There's a good chance I will be cancer free in the near future.''

GOOD SPIRITS

He looked a little gaunt but was in otherwise good spirits at the golf tournament, which was organized by the Los Angeles Police Department. He was accompanied by his 10-year-old son, Wolfgang, while four police officers kept dozens of autograph hounds at bay.

Adopting a curious one-legged stance, an enthusiastic Van Halen was rarely able to keep the ball on the fairway. His golf cart skills were not much better. He accidentally rammed another cart and then plowed into a female fan, blaming the latter incident on Wolfgang. There were no injuries.

Van Halen indicated his band remained in flux. The group's third singer, Gary Cherone, left in November 1999 after a three-year stint and has not been replaced. However, original singer David Lee Roth recently said he reunited with his former colleagues last July to record three ``astonishing tunes.''

Van Halen said on Saturday those tracks will ``probably'' not be released.

``The band has always been together,'' he added. ``Whether we have a singer or not is a different story. ... Depends what we do.''

Roth fronted Van Halen through its most successful phase, from 1974 to 1985, when it rocked the charts with such tunes as ''Dance The Night Away'' and ``Jump.'' He quit to pursue an ultimately underwhelming solo career and was replaced by Sammy Hagar, who helped the band maintain its momentum before splitting acrimoniously in 1996.
