This Itanium 'launch' seems forced and premature, since, as you say, it's just another pilot, really, and they've already 'launched' that at least once. This increases my suspicion that AMD has managed some big partners for the SMP intro, and this is an Intel PR effort to blunt the impact. Much like they jabbered on and on about Willamette right around last year's Thunderbird release." Yes...The sudden shift in INTC's PR focus to the server segment is suspicious indeed...One can see in the print media a major shift in INTC's advertising coverage to this segment over the past couple of weels...Can significant OEM subsidies be far in the offing??? No matter, AMD's entry into this, until now, sacred INTC domain, on June 4, almost 2 years after the DM Athy dinner presentation, initiates a new phase in AMD's evolution, a phase during which the "enterprise" will appreciate and benefit from the competitive product offerings brought by AMD to this segment... Coincidentally, Paul's recent incessant stream of strident clamourings (paranoia???) on the subject of INTC's current superior product lineup across the server segment (at least until June 4), is likely also a harbinger of a coming AMD challenge in this segment, and the window between now and June 4 may well represent Paul's last opportunity to wale away (he seems to be making the most of it) before the AMD siege on June 4 of this formidable INTC bastion takes place, a siege with a likely outcome not dissimilar to the successful siege by the Athy on the P3 over the past 2 years...
