HP's ideal opportunity for unbundling an OS came with the purchase of Apollo. I wrote to them at that time suggesting that, instead of licensing the PA-RISC architecture, they turn the Apollo PRISM variant of the Domain OS over to an independent development/support organization while licensing the PRISM architecture to manufactures in a manner similar to what DEC/Compaq has done with Alpha.

Within the bounds of my suggestion, HP would have ported Domain to the x86 architecture, retaining all rights to Domain on architectures other than PRISM, with the independent organization having the responsibility of porting each version to PRISM.

Had they done this, they could be porting Domain to Itanium as their "nonproprietary" OS.
