hi tc

nobody's gonna sneak the crack of dawn past you, that's for sure!

i just started back in fiddling with the two firewalls on win95 pc. when last i left you, my plan was to stop npf from loading at start up, and to add za back into start up. you may recall that up until now, having za load on start up resulted in a bsod every time.

well, it worked. starting za on reboot without npf is a go. then, i enabled npf manually, and all was still well.

soooo, i'm now once again going for the ambitious route of having both firewalls load on windows start. i'm testing that now. i'm keeping my fingers crossed that one of them learned something (i mean, somebody has to, right?), and maybe they'll finally find a way to coexist.....

not gonna happen. blue screened me with "VxD ---, called from VxD PPPMAC(04)". oddly, i was able to continue past the bsod by "hitting any key to continue" (the space bar). i don't think i have ever been able to get past a bsod in this manner, even though the 'continue' language is there.

so, for now, until i hear from za support, i'll just start za manually.

btw, pw pm'd me with a possible solution that i still have to play with. tomorrow is another day. or is today another day?

:)

mark

I have WinME. And as long as i know this isn't a problem that needs solving, the little wait doesn't bother me, either. There is a little sound that the computer emits with a manual shutdown that it doesn't with the Start... Shut down, method. My old computer did that (it emitted a sound like a sudden electrical puff) on all shutdowns, but the fact that this one is nommally silent makes it sound like a protest.

Why would a TSR program not close properly when I turn the computer off manually after the defrag but close properly the rest of the time? (If that's the problem...)

I have Optimum Online, a cable connection. Do others with a cable connection turn their computers off at night, or leave it on all the time? Maybe I should just leave it on?

I'm using Win98 se with the shutdown patch but still run into the problem. I have guessed that's it's a small glitch between Enditall and my computer fighting over which one is boss.

TC,

A work around on your shutdown issue is to use the Shutz program. I use it on my old win 98 system and it solved the problem of not being able to shutdown properly after using enditall.
