Why? I don't know either. Only thing is that in late 1998, AOL gobbled up NSCP (http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/944458/0001047469-98-042379.txt) at a decent premium,...

I think it was the premium for the slaughter, but I could be wronk.

The reason for it has been stated by the recent press release: Netscape is used to increase the "bargaining power"; now I understand what they mean when they call it strategic acquisition.
