News flash: McCain, Gephardt discuss the issues of the day.

Note that McCain requested the meeting with Gephardt, but the Arizona senator had other obligations which prevented him from meeting with D-Dubya-I over supper late last week. All this according to the Wall Street Journal. (I'm sorry the source of this report isn't as "credible" as the Washington Times or Faux News or Newsmax.com.)

The following from the Wall Street Journal:

"In one indication of Sen. McCain's own independent streak, he met privately late last week with Richard Gephardt, the Democratic leader of the House. The meeting, which lasted about 45 minutes, was held at Sen. McCain's request, to discuss his campaign-finance bill. He also pledged to push for legislation to reform the nation's system for conducting elections, a top priority of the Democrats in the House Black Caucus. Indeed, Sen. McCain is expected to have a town-hall meeting, possibly in Memphis, Tenn., with two black House Democrats, John Lewis of Georgia and Harold Ford of Tennessee, in coming months."

Actually, I'm hoping McCain stays a Republican. He would be far more effective to the cause of meaningful reform in this country as a Republican than as a Democrat or an independent.
