I don't have an answer for that, the S&P is not as straight forward as a pure commodity like gold. In the last two weeks, "commercials" have increased their shorting, but that may be quite meaningless, without knowing how much is total commitment in index funds. I don't have these numbers, but I would guess that a realtive index of total money commited to S&P 500 index funds vs the "short/long" position might be useful, rather than the absolute value of outstanding short or long contracts in the pits.
