Claude, I have no great answers as to why the CB did not sell more aggressively during previous price peaks, I have few speculations:

1. They waited for better prices, like many bulls do.
2. They had an internal agreement (in essence like the more recent WAG) not to overload the market with their supply.
3. They did not want to signal to the whole world their intention to debase currencies from gold, at least not as a discontinuous event.
