From the WSJ:

To a suitor such as Alcatel, the most attractive unit is Lucent's wireless-technology business, which is based on the CDMA standard common in the U.S. and Latin America. The company has a deep base of customers in these areas, and recent deals in China have provided a boost.

Here is something I found on Alcatel, while re-checking a fiber network story...

Alcatel Takes Control of Satellite Unit;
360Networks Outlook Hurts Its Stock
Dow Jones Newswires
PARIS -- Alcatel SA has taken full control of its satellite unit Alcatel Space and reduced its holding in French defense-electronics company Thales SA in a cash-and-shares deal that gives Alcatel a key position in the data-transmission business.

Alcatel said Wednesday it agreed to buy from Thales the 48.8% stake in Alcatel Space it didn't already own, paying Thales 795 million euros ($698.7 million), half in cash and half in Thales shares.

Meanwhile, Alcatel stock took a hit Wednesday after Canadian telecommunications carrier 360networks Inc. lowered its financial projections for 2001...<snip>>
(ed: the deal being that TSIX nets cancelled their Asian fiber network build-plans, hence the subsea equipment destined to be provided by Alcatel will not be needed....unless Alcatel puts up ~$300M vendor financing)
<<<<>>>>>>

CDMA is the wireless data coinage of this next evolutionary leg of communications. Alcatel and Lucent combined could have an awesome potential of viability in servicing this trend. mt

<Will Alcatel management spend $34 billion dollars (plus assumed debt?) just for the opportunity to try and "kill" CDMA?> To kill CDMA will take a lot more than buying one supplier. Killing CDMA is tougher than cornering the silver market and look what happened to the Hunt brothers when they tried doing that.

There are simply too many licensees and too much interest in too big a market to kill it off by buying it up and shutting it down [even if such a mad strategy made sense somehow].

It would only take a few suppliers to stay in business and they would enjoy a more restricted market. Alcatel isn't so stupid as to try to shut down CDMA by buying Lucent.

I'm with you. I think Alcatel wants what they are buying.
