TAIWAN PRESS:UMC Sees Improvement In June Orders Over May

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--United Microelectronics Corp. (Q.UME) Chief Executive Peter Chang said although there is only a slight improvement in the semiconductor sector, the chipmaker's orders for June are better than those for May, China Times reports. Chang is also quoted as saying he expects the sector to remain volatile.

ACCUMULATE Taiwan’s IC shares through 2Q01. UMC (2303 TT) announced yesterday that orders rose in June from May; the company might report positive month-on-month sales growth for the first time since last November. UMC’s monthly sales have declined sharply from NT$10.9bn in November 2000 to NT$5.8bn in April 2001, a 47% drop. In our opinion, the rebound of UMC's sales in June is a signal that recovery is coming to the semiconductor industry. We recommend that investors ACCUMULATE Taiwan IC shares ASE (2311 TT), SPIL (2325 TT), Winbond (2344 TT), Nanya (2408 TT), Powerchip (5346 TT), UMC (2303 TT) and TSMC (2330 TT) through 2Q01.
